Responsibilities:

The Dog Control Officer is responsible for enforcing all state and local laws pertaining to dog licensing, behavior, and ownership. If you have any related questions, concerns, or issues please call and leave a message if necessary. Any suspected cases of abuse or neglect can be reported 24 hours a day. If you live within Ulster County but outside of the Town of Hurley, you may still feel free to call the Hurley Dog Control Officer with questions or to find out who the appropriate official is in your locale.

Dog Licenses

 

All dogs over 6 months old belonging to individuals residing in the Town of Hurley must be licensed. There is no fee for licensing guide dogs, war dogs, police dogs, work dogs, hearing dogs, or service dogs. Dog licenses can be purchased from the Town Clerk at Town Hall during normal business hours. You can call the Dog Control Officer, or call or email the Clerk if you have questions.

Rules and Regulations

Leash laws are strictly enforced

It shall be unlawful for any dog in the Town of Hurley to:

  1. Run at large
  2. Be on any property other than that of its owner or harborer, unless said dog is restrained by an adequate collar and leash, or unless accompanied by or within a reasonable distance of its owner or a responsible person over 12 years of age, able to control the animal. For the purpose of this article, a dog or dogs hunting in company of a hunter or hunters shall be considered as accompanied by its owner.
  3. Engage in habitual loud howling or barking, or to conduct itself in such manner so as to habitually annoy any person other than the owner or persons harboring the animal.

It is strongly recommended in the Town of Hurley, as in other towns, that you have your dog neutered or spayed by the time they are 6 months old. For assistance with low cost spaying and neutering you can call the SPCA Spay and Neuter Clinic at 331-5377 or Friends of Animals at 1-800-321-7387
